Troubies come up short against Wildcats

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Senior quarterback Emma Karamanoukian threw a career-high five touchdowns, helping St. Francis pull away from a 12-12 tie en route to a 30-24 win over Whitney in the varsity end of a Sierra Foothill League flag football doubleheader at Wildcat Stadium Tuesday night.

The Troubadours improve to 4-6 for the season, and 2-4 in SFL play.

Karamanoukian hit Tayli Paeu-Lindgren for a pair of strikes to keep SF and Whitney even at 12-12 at the break. In the second half, an Elizabeth Barger interception led to a third aerial touchdown. This time, Karamanoukian hit Caitlin Hafenstein on a swing pass, then the soccer/track star ran it 40 yards to the end zone.

Karamanoukian continued with passing touchdowns to Eva Karamanoukian and Brooklyn Kann to propel the Troubies to a 30-18 lead. Whitney rallied for a long rushing TD to pull within one possession, and St. Francis was forced to punt on its next series. But Lucia Vicio came up with a key interception after the two-minute warning, allowing the Troubies to run out the clock.

The 30 points is the most scored by the Troubies in the program's inaugural season, surpassing the 22 against Del Oro on September 19.

The SF junior varsity lost a 19-18 heartbreaker in its half of the doubleheader. Freshman Haydyn Haecker tossed a pair of touchdowns in the first half, then Jocelyn Villaflor took over behind center for a third TD in the waning seconds of the second half. The Troubies opted for a two-point conversion and the win, but the pass to Haecker – now playing receiver in the second half – sailed just long and forced her beyond the end line. The Wildcats held on to the one-point victory, having scored on two pick sixes earlier in the contest.

St. Francis JV moves to 2-4 for the year.

Both Troubadour teams continue SFL action at Davis on Thursday. Start times are 7 p.m. for JV, 8 p.m. for varsity at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium.
