Swimming Defeats Franklin Behind Nine Event Wins

ELK GROVE, Calif - The St. Francis swimming team won nine of 11 events and swept the diving to post a 131-51 dual meet victory over Franklin on Wednesday at the Wackford Pool Complex.

Freshman Ava Chavez won the 200 freestyle (1:53.05) and 100 freestyle (53.40) and contributed on two of the Troubadour's winning relays. She swam the freestyle leg on the 200 individual medley that won in 1:53.05, joining teammates freshman Sarah Ranlett, sophomore Victoria Cao and freshman Maddy Ching. She also anchored the 400-yard free relay win to close the meet in 3:43.84.

"She is a talented swimmer and we are excited to get four years with her," said Contreras. "She really wants to represent the team and is swimming some pretty fast times for in season. She did a really good job."

Cao won the 200 individual medley in 2:12.10 and won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.70, while Ching took the 50-yard freestyle in 25.78 and 100-yard butterfly in 58.40.

"Maddy put up some really good times despite not feeling well," said Contreras. "We have some really young talent and that is exciting for not only this year but the future."

Ranlett joined senior Emma Peters, freshman Rachael Madden and junior Abigail Brown to take the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:51.80. Junior Maddie Hoppa won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.50 and was second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.50)

Freshman Makena Adams won the 500 freestyle in 5:46.68.

The Frosh/Soph team also posted impressive races. Freshman Grace Himmelmann won the 200 freestyle (2:21.30), freshman Camille Olsen took the 200 IM in 2:42.10 and freshman Jordyn Larson won the 50 freestyle in 26.70 to edge Perry (26.90)

Sophomore Elin Perry cruised to a victory in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:12.49, while Felicita Matthews won the 100-yard freestyle in 1:11.20 and freshman Ava Lu Fortik won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:33.70.  Sophomore Alyssa Harmon won the 100 breaststroke in 1:30.00.

The Troubies also swept all three relays in the Frosh/Soph meet. Freshman Vivian Bair, Harmon, Larson and freshman Sydney Glenn won the 200 1M relay, while Glenn paired with sophomore Carlie Colonnello, sophomore Andrea Kustic and freshman Maile Hodges to win the 200 free relay.

 Perry, freshman Ella Tilson, Himmelmann and Fortik took the 400 free relay in 4:32.97.

St. Francis returns to the pool next week against Sheldon on March 11 for their annual Booster Que in conjunction with the Holy Spikes track and field meet.

"I am excited to get our whole team out there in our home opener," said Contreras. "I am excited to share the venue at Jesuit with track and field (hosting Christian Brothers in Holy Spikes) and feel the energy with all the Troubies in one place."

St. Francis hosts its Cap Ceremony on Thursday night at St. Francis at 6 p.m.
