Troubies sweep defending Delta League champions

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior opposite Caroline Foraker hammered team highs of 11 kills and six service aces while middle blockers Sophia Garza and Lily Zeff combined for 10-1-16 hitting, leading St. Francis varsity to a 25-22, 25-11, 25-12 sweep of Cosumnes Oaks in the finale of a Delta League girls' volleyball tripleheader at the SFHS gym Tuesday night.

The win over the defending league champs improves the Troubadours to 14-6 for the year and 6-0 in league play. It also snaps a three-match losing streak to the Wolfpack, which won both regular-season meetings and the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinal matchup in 2021.

The St. Francis frosh and junior varsity teams also earned sweeps over CO Tuesday night. The younger squad prevailed by scores of 25-17, 25-10; while the JV crew held its guests to 25-8, 25-13 for the win.

Foraker highlighted the Troubies in the more closely contested opening set in the varsity nightcap. She had five kills and three aces to account for almost a third of the scoring. CO led by as much as 18-15 following a Jahniya Jackson dink and Chloe Lester ace during a brief 4-0 stretch for the Falcons. Olivia Mlikotin's tip ended that run, then her block with Zeff tied the proceedings at 18-18. Karissa Siopongco got the Birds back up by a 20-18 advantage with her ace, and a successful tool kept CO ahead by a 21-19 margin two points later. But a Foraker slide began the 5-1 finish for St. Francis. Veronica Datwyler served up an ace to make it 23-22, then another tough serve forced an errant pass toward the Troubies left side. Charlise Rowe was there to slam it back for a 24-22 set point. Foraker landed the winner with a deftly placed shoot over the net.

Foraker's hitting continued to propel SF in a more dominating second set. She had five kills while libero Jackie Smith notched three aces in the frame, which the Troubies led by as much as 22-6 before allowing a brief CO comeback. A Falcon roll shot missed its mark to set the board at 24-10, then Foraker's tool closed out the stanza soon after, giving St. Francis the 2-0 match lead.

Senior Sofia Alkire helped serve most of an 8-1 run that stretched a 9-7 lead into a 17-8 cushion in the third. Among the highlights of that set was a long, scrambling rally that culminated with Zeff and Mlikotin combining on a block. Ellie Carpenter, who came off the bench, came up with a lunging dig on the play. Smith, who led the Troubies with 10 digs overall, figured heavily in keeping the ball live enough for CO to hit into the SF block.

Zeff finished the night with four kills and no errors on seven swings, while Garza tallied six errors on nine total attempts. As a team, St. Francis hit .225 (33-15-80), with Kelsey Magley and Kate Fobes providing most of the setting duties.

The Troubie frosh won the night's opener in straight sets, although not without a minor scare in the first set. Justine Stegall had two free balls fall in for kills in a 7-0 start, but CO managed to crawl back to within a three-point deficit on five different occasions, including 18-15. Emma Robinson knocked down a kill and served up an ace in a run of five unanswered as SF pulled away to the eight-point win. In the second set, Reese Walker scored three kills while CO suffered a late run of unforced errors to give the Troubies the 25-10 victory. The frosh team now sits just one victory shy of 20 for the season (19-3), extending its win streak to 15 straight.

In the JV win, Layla Alexander had two kills and three aces while Nika Jafari also had three winners from the service line to forge a 25-8 win in the opening set. The second frame proved to be the Gabrielle Rowe show: six kills overall, including five in a 9-3 start to lead a wire-to-wire triumph. Natalie Sandoval's back-to-back aces and two late kills also highlighted the scoring as the jayvees moved to 16-2 for the year and 6-0 in Delta League play.

The three St. Francis teams are now a combined 42-0 in sets during Delta League matches this year. The remain at home to host Franklin on Thursday night as part of the school's Homecoming week. Match times are the usual 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.
