Magnificent seven prepares for CIF state championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A total of seven St. Francis swimmers will compete in the seventh CIF state swimming championships, held Friday and Saturday at the Clovis Olympic Sports Complex. Alphabetically, the Troubadour representatives are senior Ava Chavez, senior Maddy Ching, junior Makenna Frederiksen, senior LK Holliday, sophomore Erica Jaffe, senior Jordyn Larson and junior Grace Mering.

Chavez, Ching, Jaffe and Mering earned berths in individual events at the state meet, while Frederiksen, Holliday and Larson are parts in at least one of the three qualifying SF relays. St. Francis enters the CIF championship on the heels of winning the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship.

Impressively, although perhaps not surprisingly, three of the four seniors are headed to collegiate swim programs: Chavez to Cal, Ching to UC Davis, and Larson to Pepperdine. Holliday inked a commitment to collegiate athletics, albeit in a different sport: she will compete in the Western events for the UC Davis equestrian team this fall.

The seven Troubies combine for 10 total entries at the state championships, with six seeded among the top eight in the meet. Chavez ranks third among the 200-yard freestyle competitors with her 1:47.85, and fourth in the 100 butterfly at 53.97. Jaffe is also positioned to reach championship finals with her No. 8 seed in the 200 individual medley (2:01.57) and No. 3 entering mark in the 100 backstroke (54.53).

Of the three relays, the 400 free foursome of Chavez, Ching, Mering and Jaffe enter the weekend with the No. 4 time of 3:26.37. The 200 free squad of Chavez, Jaffe, Ching and Holliday hold a No. 8 seed mark of 1:35.37.

If all St. Francis individuals and relays finish exactly as seeded, the Troubadours will score 117 points in the meet. For reference, last year's team tied for a program-best eighth with 74 points, while 117 would have taken third place.

The CIF state championship meet actually spans Thursday-Saturday, May 11-13, which diving championships taking place on the Thursday session. A summary of all SF entries is listed below. The meet will be streamed live to www.nfhsnetwork.com/associations/cif, while tickets are available at GoFan (gofan.co/app/school/CIF). For live results, download the MeetMobile app.
