Double-dual wins highlight swimming's Senior Day

CARMICHAEL, Calif. – Senior Ava Chavez and sophomore Erica Jaffe each won two events, but the spotlight rested on St. Francis' sizable senior class as the Troubadours beat both Sheldon and Pleasant Grove in a Delta League double-dual swimming meet at Jesuit High Friday.

St. Francis outscored Sheldon by a 137-24 margin, while also defeating PG by scores of 124-54. Both tallies included 13 points from diving, which officially competed against the Huskies and Eagles as part of Wednesday's one-meter board event at Rio Americano, even though neither Elk Grove school was actually at the meet.

Alphabetically, the Troubie senior class comprises Emmy Asperger, Sarah Becker, Teaghan Brostrom, Chavez, Maddy Ching, Isabella Davis, Sydney Glenn, LK Holliday, Bianca Ignacio, Greta Laborde Lagrave, Jordyn Larson, Rachael Madden and Camille Olsen. All were honored as part of a ceremony prior to the meet. Friday's meet is the penultimate home dual of the season, but the home finale against Carondelet takes place during the school's two-week spring break.

Friday's meet was also unusual in that it only included varsity races on the girls' side.

Chavez was the lone SF entrant in the 200-yard individual medley. She touched home in two minutes, 5.35 seconds; then later won the 100 freestyle with a 52.71 clocking. Jaffe won her events back-to-back: a 24.98 in the 50 free followed by a 58.63 in the 100 butterfly. Jaffe also led off the Troubies' winning 200 free relay (1:43.91) and swam the third leg of the 400 free relay (3:50.76).

In fact, St. Francis won every event except for the 200 free, which belonged to PG's Audrey Ng at 1:59.49. Grace Mering and Makenna Frederiksen also posted individual wins in the 100 backstroke (1:01.31) and 100 breaststroke (1:11.53), respectively.

The Troubadours host Carondelet for their home finale on Monday at 3:30 p.m. The meet between the two all-girls Catholic high schools also features a reunion of two former Cal Golden Bear swimmers: SF mentor Brian Nabeta and Cougar head coach Roque Santos. Tuesday's meet will also host the annual Booster-Q barbecue.
