Towne, 4x400 relay win Delta League titles

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Senior Kayla Towne won the 800-meter run then the foursome of Kennedy Bishop, Colleen Medina, Alina Gutierrez and Alexa Randall added a second title in the 4x400 relay, as St. Francis captured first-place points in two more varsity events en route to a third-place finish on Day 2 at the Delta League track & field championships Tuesday.

The Troubadours finished with 114 total points, just behind second-place Pleasant Grove's 121.5. Davis dominated the meet with a 204.5 total. Franklin (77), Cosumnes Oaks (67), Sheldon (55) and host Elk Grove (17) rounded out the girls' team scoring.

The UC Davis-bound Towne crossed the line in two minutes, 16.88 seconds to overtake Davis' Norah Feldt (2:20.45). In fact, she led a 1-3-8 St. Francis finish in the event, with Kelsey Sutch posting a personal-record 2:22.16 behind Feldt. Then senior Pamela Vargas passed two competitors on the home stretch to take eighth at 2:26.92. The last flourish gives St. Francis one more qualifier to the Sac-Joaquin Section championship run, as only the top eight finishers from the Delta League advance to the Division I meet.

The 4x400 team compiled a winning time of 4:09.51, besting Davis by a margin of just 1.34 seconds for another 10 points in the scoring column. The Bishop-Medina-Gutierrez-Randall crew has solidified St. Francis in that event, following a 4:05.82 at the Meet of Champions 10 days earlier.

The Troubies also managed another 10 points from the pole vault, with senior Kendal Graham and sophomore Penelope Cole finishing third (8-foot-3) and fifth (7-foot-9). The 100-meter dash also provided SF with multiple scorers, thanks to Caitlin Hafenstein and Kyah Pickett, who respectively took fifth (12.85) and sixth (12.90) for seven total points.

Senior Grace Dunham followed her 3,200 title on Saturday with a 1,600 runner-up finish. She ran 5:05.00 to finish well behind Davis' Norah Feldt (5:00.63) but also well ahead of third-place Kylie Monson of PG (5:09.45). Matching those eight second-place points was the 4x100 relay of Kyah Pickett, Randall, Yasmin Azar and Caitlin Hafenstein, which broke the 50-second mark for the first time in 2024 with a 49.22 mark.

Another highlight belongs to SF freshman Tayli Paeu-Lindgren, who posted a long jump attempt of 17-1. This would be a personal record and an improvement to a tie for ninth in the school record book, but no wind readings were recorded to validate a record. Still, this gave the Troubie flag football and basketball standout a third-place finish in the meet despite a month-long absence due to injury.

Sophomore Antonija Jezildzic enjoyed the Troubies' best frosh-soph finish, winning the shot put with a PR of 29-3.5. This represents her second JV title of the meet, as she won the discus by more than eight feet in Saturday's session. Additionally, Chloe Harrison enjoyed a strong overall day in the frosh-soph side of the meet: she finished second in the 1,600 (5:45.92) then added a fourth in the 800 final (2:37.19).

The top eight finishers from each varsity event advances to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Championships, hosted by Folsom High on May 7 and 9. Athletes then advance from the divisional meets to the SJS Masters on May 17-18, from which the top performers move on to the state championships on May 24-25.
