Volleyball Passes First Test in Opener with 3-1 Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team opened the 2019 season with a 3-1 upset win over Sacramento Bee top-ranked Rocklin Tuesday. The Troubadours posted score of 25-22, 23-25, 25-13 and 25-20.

"I thought they did a really good job especially coming off back-to-back matches," said Head Coach Alynn Wright, who started her 31st season coaching the program. "We had moments of really tenacious defense and play and moments of miscues. Which is expected early season."

St. Francis, the No. 2 ranked team in the bee poll, fell behind in the first set, trailing 22-18 before reeling off seven straight points to take the first set and reset the momentum of the match.

"It was impressive the way they battled back in the first set," said Wright. "But then they let up a bit."

The Thunder took the second set 25-23 to even the match at 1 but the Troubies made sure the third was not close, closing out the set to take the lead 25-13.

"There was a lot of growth in the team," said Wright. "We have to fine tune those little things."

Senior Alexa Edwards led the team with 17 kills and added 19 digs for a double-double. Junior Danica Nelson led the team with 32 digs and Ellie Eichhorn had 24 assists.

""It feels great to start off with a win," said Edwards. "We had a team win. We have put in the work in practice but we have seen we a lot to work on. I am grateful and hopeful about our potential."

St. Francis travels to El Camino on Thursday for the first road test of the season.
