CARMICHAEL, Calif. – The St. Francis track and field team won the annual Holy Spikes meet 103-49 over Christian Brothers, winning nine events to claim the meet.
"It is really important for us because it is a big rivalry," said senior Serena Shimada. "It is fun to see our friends from the other schools and compete."
Sophomore Reyna Johnson won the 100 hurdles in 15.32 as the Troubies swept the event with Serena Shimada in second and Isabella Palchak in third. Shimada came back to win the 300m hurdles in 47.61 and run on the winning 4x100m relay with Johnson, Chanel Grimes and Isabelle Grassel.
""It felt really good" said Shimada of her 300m hurdle race. "I made all the hurdles with my right leg which is a first for me. I just kept pushing. We PR'd on the 4x100 by .04 of a second. It is not much but it all adds up and our handoffs are getting better."
In the field events, the Troubadours scored major points with sweeps in the pole vault, high jump and long jump. Sophomore Molly Chambers vaulted 9-0 as the Troubies swept the top three spots. Palchak won the high jump with a best of 5-4 as SF scored all 11 points and Grassel led the long jump with a best of 15-7.5
Freshman Cate Joaquin won the 1600m in 5:13.55 with junior Haley Silva in second and junior Emma Hollenbach in third.
Junior Isabella Fauria won the 800 meters ahead of Joaquin and Haley Silva, while Joaquin was the top finisher in the 3200 in second in 12:42.24 with classmate Tatiana Cornejo in third in 12:42.62.
"It was a pretty good shake out race at the beginning of the season," said Fauria of her 800m. "Everyone did really well.
In the Frosh/Soph Meet, St. Francis won 104-33 overall. Freshman Claire Silva led the team with three individual victories, taking the 1600m, 800m and 1600m meter races. Freshman Kenna de Lemos swept the sprints, taking the 100 in 13.10 and 200 meters in 27.05. Freshmen Simone Sagay and Gabriella McGahan rounded out the top three in each race, alternating second and third-place finishes.
Sophomore Rose Goyette won both the shot put and discus to add to the Troubie point total. She has a personal-best 24.7 in the shot put and a throw of 63-9 in the discus.
St. Francis will be represented at the Title IX Invitational hosted at American River College on Saturday.
