Tennis Seniors Complete Perfect Delta League Careers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – For the four St. Francis tennis seniors, they had one final task to complete on Thursday to finish off a perfect 48-0 career in Delta League play for the program. They each played and won a singles match as the Troubadours posted a 9-0 win over Cosumnes Oaks at Rio del Oro Racquet club.

"It means a lot to be here and play with my team for our last league match," said senior Adithi Benush. "I am really happy with the connections I have made and friends. It has been a wonderful four years and this last match is super important to us."

Juniors Alisha Anwar and Alex Evans acted if they wanted to get off the seniors' stage, posting straight-set 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 2 and 4 singles, respectively, for the quick 2-0 lead in the match.

Benush pushed the lead to 3-0 after posting a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1. Senior Peyton Spellacy was next off with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6, while senior Samantha Sonntag was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 3 to clinch the match.

"It is great to join this team and be part of this legacy," said Spellacy.

Junior Maddie Brown and sophomore Lauren Lai cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Senior Bianca Ariza closed out her match 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 to complete the singles sweep. Juniors Allison Prestwich and Siena Vincent rebounded from a slow start with a 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3 and junior Rosmy Alengaden and freshman Lucy Phillips closed out the match with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win at No. 2.

The 9-0 win completed the fourth straight undefeated championship season for the program (48-0), while extending the overall league win streak to 55 straight.

"The streak says a lot about our ladder strength all the way down to have everyone on our team carry us and stay undefeated for all these years," said Benush.

Overall, Ariza, Benush, Sonntag and Spellacy were part of a Section Championship, four Delta League title and three CIF NorCal appearances.

St. Francis will have representatives in the Delta League Singles (Oct. 28) and Doubles (Oct. 30) next week before starting section playoffs on Nov. 4.
