Tennis Finishes Ninth at Golden State Classic

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team finished ninth at the Golden State Classic with a 6-0 win over Los Altos in the consolation championship match Saturday at Stanford University. The Troubadours went 3-1 for the opening weekend including wins over Monte Vista (6-0), Los Gatos (4-3) and Los Altos. It was the second consecutive season St. Francis finished fifth at the elite event featuring the top teams in Northern California.

The Troubadours won the consolation final by sweeping all six singles and doubles matches. SF got singles wins by senior Adithi Benush at No. 1 (6-0, 6-1), junior Alisha Anwar at No. 2 (6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5)) and junior Alex Evans at No. 3 (7-5, 6-2).

SF also swept all three doubles matches. Seniors Bianca Ariza and Samantha Sonntag won at No. 1 in three sets  6-0, 6-7, 1-0 (10-5). Junior Izzy Asker and sophomore Safaa Umar combined to win at No. 2 6-3, 6-0, while senior Peyton Spellacy and sophomore Polina Greenberg were winners at No. 3 by the score of 6-3, 6-2.

The Troubies defeated Los Gatos in the consolation semifinals via a unique tiebreaker. With the match tied at 3, the tiebreaker counted sets won (6-6) and then games won (44-43) which the Troubies won via this last game by Bianca Ariza and Samantha Sonntag to close out a 6-3, 6-0 win.

Overall, SF outscored Los Gatos 36-7 versus 36-8 deficit in singles.

The format for the event includes three lines of singles and three of doubles.

For the weekend. Asker and Umar were perfect, combining for a 4-0 record in doubles and both No. 1 and No. 2. Four players posted three wins including Anwar, Ariza, Sonntag and Spellacy.
