Tennis Splits Two Matches at Golden State Classic

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team opened the 2019 season Friday at the Golden State Tennis Classic, splitting two matches against Palo Alto and Monte Vista.

The Troubadours lost to Palo Alto in the opening match 4-2. St. Francis got wins by junior Alisha Anwar at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-4 and a doubles win by junior Izzy Asker and sophomore Safaa Umar 6-2. 6-1 at No. 2. Senior Adithi Benish and junior Alex Evans lost in singles, while doubles pairs Bianca Ariza and Sam Sonntag and Peyton Spellacy and Aniyus Pierre dropped doubles matches.

SF rebounded in the consolation draw with a 6-0 win over Monte Vista, sweeping all three singles and doubles matches.

Benush, Anwar and Sonntag were straight set winners in singles, while the pairs of Asker/Umar, Ariza/Evans and Spellacy and freshman Polina Greenberg won straight set victories in doubles.

The format for the event includes three lines of singles and three of doubles.

St. Francis will play at 9 a.m. at Stanford Stadium against Los Gatos with the winner playing for fifth place against the other side of the draw.
