JV Gold wins Manteca Varsity Buffs Cup

MANTECA, Calif. -- Sophomores Yasmin Azar and Summer Silvestri each scored goals to lead St. Francis junior varsity Gold to a 2-0 win over host Manteca in the 13th-annual Varsity Buff Cup girls' high school soccer tournament at Guss Schmiedt Field Saturday afternoon.

Azar, Becca Weil and Maggie Koerwitz each captured all-tournament distinction.

The Troubadours previously defeated Edison High, 8-0 in the semifinal that morning to advance to the title match. Azar, Weil, Tacori Abril, Nayeli Kojima, Kyah Pickett and Piper Sherburne each netted goals, while Edison put two into the back of their own net. Alexandra Karlshoej and Abril also had a pair of assists while Azar chipped in another dime for the Troubies.

The JV Gold win goes hand-in-hand with JV Red's tournament victory. Impressively, the JV Gold squad faced a field of varsity teams, while the all-freshman JV Red team defeated a tournament draw of JV squads from other schools.

All three SFHS soccer teams return to action on Tuesday, December 7. The varsity and JV Gold head to Franklin for concurrent games at 3:15 p.m. while the JV Red crew travels to Folsom for a contest at Vista Del Lago at 3:30 p.m.
