Soccer Defeats Pleasant Grove 1-0 in Senior Game; Earns National Ranking

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Janae DeFazio scored her 40th career goal to give St. Francis a 1-0 win over Pleasant Grove in the annual Senior Game celebration.

"It was super cool and it was really special after playing four years with this team," said DeFazio. "It means a lot to reach 40 goals especially since scoring goals is one of my roles on the team."

The goal came in the second half after the teams had played a tight first half. Senior Jackie Koerwitz provided the assist off a pass out of a corner kick. DeFazio dribbled in towards the goal and shot it past the goalie for the 1-0 advantage.

"Janae is a special player," said Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. "For me anytime she has 1v1 or has a chance, I want her to take it. She is a difference maker and in a game that is super cold and messy, it is hard to make those saves all the time. It was a good goal."

The Troubadours have been playing solid defense of late behind their solid back line and goalie tandem.

"We are communicating, shifting and playing as a team," said junior Marli Berry. "We have a really good back line with (Hailey) Lemon and all the outside backs."

St. Francis is now 15-2-4 and 8-1-1 in league play with a seven-game unbeaten streak and have allowed just one goal during that stretch. The Troubies earned a spot in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Fab 50 this week, coming in the poll at No. 26.

St. Francis plays at Franklin on Wednesday at 3 p.m. followed by a makeup game against Cosumnes Oaks on Thursday.
