Golf’s Haanya Niazi Named GoTroubies.com Athlete of the Week

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior golf star Haanya Niazi named GoTroubies.com Athlete of the Week. She was nominated for the week of Sept. 22-29 for placing first in two matches and leading the team to two wins. 

On Sept. 23, St. Francis golf edged out Pleasant Grove High School in a dual match 224-226. Niazi, leading the team, tied for medalist honors with Pleasant Grove's Sadia Sadiq as both posted four-over par rounds of 40. On Sept. 25 Niazi also had stellar play tying SFHS senior Madeline Lee for medalist honors with two-over par rounds of 38 at the Wildhawk Golf Course in a dual match win over Elk Grove.

"Haanya has been really consistent throughout this whole season," said Golf Head Coach Kelli Corlett. "She is hitting the ball really well and putting the ball super well." 

Golf will compete in Davis at Wildhorse Golf Course on October 7 beginning play at 12:00 p.m.

Q&A with Haanya Niazi

Coming off matches against Pleasant Grove and Elk Grove how do you feel you played?

" I think I played really well. I had some really good shots. Overall I am really proud of our team as a whole."

What are you most looking forward to getting deeper into the season?

"One of my favorite parts of the golf team is getting to know everyone. Playing with people from all the grades is really a special thing. I am definitely looking forward to spending time with my senior friends, and having it be one of the best seasons yet!"

How do you prepare for a match (mentally)?

"Just taking a second to relax and take some deep breaths slowing your head down a little bit. I go to the range hit some shots, putt a little, some short game and all that chipping."
