Swimming Finishes Second at Delta League Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis swimming and diving team placed second overall with 381 points at the Delta League Championships Friday at American River College.

Junior Emma Peters led the team with a second-place finish in the 200y freestyle and third place in the 100y butter fly. She clocked a personal-best 1:54.20 in the 200y free dropping 4.41 seconds from the prelims and 59.67 in the 100y fly. She will swim both events at the sections.

"I felt really good about my swims because I did much better than I expected and had PR in my first event which was really exciting," said Peters. "In the 100y I races much better than I did Friday. It was fun to get out there and race for the team."

Junior Chloe Beebout was ninth in the 200y freestyle with sophomore Angela Altamirano and sophomore Ana Poarch-Twining touching 11th and 12th in the event. Senior Hannah Parulan recorded a personal-best 2:11.91 in the 200y individual medley to place fourth and added a fourth place in the 100y backstroke in 1:01.11.

"It is great because I was not really looking to go a best time," said Parulan. "I am having a lot of fun with my team and they motivated me to go faster."

Juniors Laura Freeworth was seventh (2:20.03) and Kendall Houck eighth (2:23.81) to score more points in the IM for St. Francis. Sophomore Jaclynn Burgess won the consolation heat in 2:21.92 to finish ninith.

The Troubadours got points from Meredith Garcia in the 50y free (5th, 25.72) and 100y breaststroke (7th, 1:12.38) with Ana Poarch-Twining placing seventh (26.45) in the 50y free. Maria Corvacho Marrugo had finals in the 100y fly (4th, 1:02.22) and 100y back (6th, 1:03.22).

Freshman Victoria Cao continued her impressive freshman season with a third in the 100y freestyle in 54.05 and fourth-place in the 100y breaststroke (1:09.48). Sophomore Maddie Hoppa swam two consolation finals in the 100y fly (9th, 1:05.40) and 100y back (9th, 1:04.25). Freshman Elin Perry was seventh in the 100y Free and 10th in 50 y free. Junior Chloe Beebout touched eighth in the 500y freestyle with sophomore Angela Altamirano finishing 10th.

In the Frosh/Soph meet, St. Francis placed second with 486 points with three individual event wins.

Freshman Lauren Jones won the 100y butterfly (1:01.46) and 100y free (56.43).

"I went out with a really good 50 split, I perfected all my turns and I was proud I stuck my breathing pattern and I won the race," said Jones of the 100 fly. "My strategy in the 100 free was to just sprint it out. I had back-to-back races so that was challenging. But I got my best times in both. I am really happy to be here with all the Troubies supporting my sisters."

Coach Richard Levin said she has been a leader for the team all season. Jones' time in the 100 fly would have been fourth in the varsity race.

"She has really been the leader in the high school practice," said Levin. "She has been working hard every day and making intervals faster to push herself. To have this meet at this point, she is only getting faster."

Freshman Bay McIntosh also won an event, capturing the 100y backstroke, while placing third in the 500y freestyle. The Troubies scored big points in the freestyle events led by freshman Ruby Stevenson in the 200y freestyle (4th, 2:19.60) and freshman Jenna Pimenta in the 50 free (26.57). SF went 2-3-4-5 in the 50 free behind Pimenta with sophomore Ashley Magley, freshman Bella Austin and sophomore Jane Gregory right behind.

Ruby Stevenson also placed sixth in the 500y free, while sister Johanna Stevenson was sixth in the 200 IM. Austin led the team in breaststroke with a second-place finish (1:23.42). Freshman Taja Suruki was the top finisher for the team in the 200y IM (5th, 2:18.60) and placed second in the 100y free behind Jones in second (1:03.96) with freshman Kelly Wilson in fourth (1:06.36). Wislon was also fourth in the 500y free.

Freshman Presleigh Seitz scored top final points in the 200y free (5th, 2:19.89) and 100y (7th, 1:03.5) free events. Magley was third in the 50y free and ninth in the 200y free, while freshman Lizzy Gilhooly was sixth in the 200y free. Annika Rea scored in the 200y IM and 100y breaststroke.

St. Francis returns to action for the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships May 4-5.

"These types of meets with prelims and finals emphasizes the team aspect of swimming," said Parulan. "Swimming truly is a team sport. We may be swimming our events individually but we are not swimming for ourselves but each other."
