Scorekeeper Dotty Brandenburger Selected for Athletics Hall of Fame

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – For those of you scoring at home, Dotty Brandenburger is becoming a member of the St. Francis Athletics Hall of Fame. She has been selected under the Contributor category for induction in the inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame Class.

“The coaching staff and the girls over the years have absolutely adored Dotty,” said Softball Head Coach Kevin Warren. “She is not only a great scorekeeper but she is energetic and supportive of the program and players. She brings energy to every ball game that she scores.”

Dotty has been the St. Francis varsity softball scorekeeper for the last 35 years. Starting with her first daughter when she played as a freshman in the 1983-84 season, and continuing every season since, Dotty has been on the book. She is a dedicated, tireless supporter of the program, its players and coaches, cheering from the sideline or booth. Coaches and umpires across the region know Dotty as the constant fixture in the scorekeepers' booth at SF, and nothing kept her from being at the games.

“Since they were nine years old both of the girls decided they were going to play softball,” recalled Brandenburger, who has five granddaughters including two current Troubies Sydney ’20 and Alex ’22. “I learned to keep score when they played Bobby Sox and I came to St. Francis and still kept score.”

Starting during her daughter’s time (Jami ’87, Kara ’92) on campus, Brandenburger has since scored hundreds of games rain or shine.

“I had so much fun with the girls and like the engagement,” said Brandenburger. “I was a yeller from time begin and have enjoyed doing it. I have just been here and nobody said they wanted my spot.”

She has many famous cheers that have become part of the tradition of the program for the players and coaches. “Do it again we like it”. “Go Team”, “Go Team dadada”, “Fight, fight team dadada”, Win team, win team dadada”, and “Whoo Whoo!”.

“There has to be an occasion for a Whoo Whoo,” said Brandenburger. “I was a cheerleader in high school so it is just automatic that I yell.”

She has a favorite memory and it might be biased despite her watching so many highlights in her career.

“We won the championship in 1986 and my daughter (Jami) hit in the winning run in,” said Brandenburger. “She hit the ball and it almost hit the nun’s house. It was very thrilling.”

She will add another thrill on Saturday when she joins six Troubadour student-athletes and the first state championship team from 1993 with induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame.

“”It means the world,” said Brandenburger of the honor. “All the energy and things to do and I like helping young people. I never ever thought it would (become) such an honor.”

Brandenburger will join her fellow inductees at the St. Francis Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
